What is laser rejuvenation?

When searching for information about laser rejuvenation on Google, it’s common to come across numerous texts that explain the procedure in various ways. This can sometimes lead to confusion and make it difficult to understand the key points. That’s why we’re here to provide a clear and straightforward explanation of laser skin rejuvenation, addressing any uncertainties you may have.
Laser rejuvenation is a procedure that can benefit individuals who are in their forties and onwards, experiencing the emergence of wrinkles or signs of aging. If you’ve noticed skin spots or photodamage, along with a slight loss of elasticity and smoothness in your face and neck, laser rejuvenation can deliver impressive results in a surprisingly short period.
While there are other aesthetic and anti-aging methods available, such as hyaluronic fillers, Botox, skin boosters, and Morpheus 8, they may not offer the same level of effectiveness or minimal invasiveness as laser rejuvenation. Surgical skin tightening, although an option, typically requires a longer recovery period.
Laser rejuvenation, on the other hand, is a safe and minimally invasive procedure that achieves remarkable results. By harnessing the therapeutic power of advanced lasers, the treatment stimulates the skin’s natural renewal mechanisms. It triggers collagen and elastin synthesis, as well as the growth of new cells. As a result, the skin regains its natural functions, becomes more resilient to external influences, and ultimately appears more beautiful, firmer, and healthier.

How does laser rejuvenation work?

Let’s briefly explain how laser treatment works. The term “LASER” stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Different wavelengths of light are used to address various medical conditions and aesthetic concerns, including dermatological issues. Here’s a clearer explanation:
The laser emits light energy that is converted into heat when it reaches our blood vessels. A skilled and experienced doctor adjusts the laser’s parameters, such as the depth of tissue penetration and the intensity of the beam, based on the specific treatment needs. The heat generated stimulates skin rejuvenation and encourages the production and restructuring of collagen.
It’s that straightforward. With just a few laser treatments, you’ll notice visible skin tightening, reduced wrinkles, improved volume, and a more even complexion. Laser treatment can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage, and hands.

Laser rejuvenation:  indications

Skin rejuvenation involves the use of various procedures and methods to address damage and signs of aging. Some of the issues that laser rejuvenation effectively and safely treats include:

If you have noticed any of these signs of skin aging, laser rejuvenation is a suitable procedure for you. The latest generation of lasers can restore a healthy and fresh appearance to your skin while also preventing the emergence of new signs of aging. They not only address existing issues but also serve as excellent preventive measures against future skin aging.

Laser Rejuvenation: 5 Facts You Must Know

Before we introduce the lasers we use in our office for rejuvenation treatments, it is important to understand some key aspects of laser rejuvenation:

  1. Laser rejuvenation is a medical procedure that should only be performed by certified doctors who are trained in laser procedures. It is crucial to choose a reputable and reliable clinic or practitioner to avoid potential complications.
  2. Not all lasers are the same, and they have different mechanisms and purposes. They can be categorized as ablative or non-ablative, and the choice of laser will affect the recovery process of your skin. It is essential to gather information and understand the specific laser technology being used to plan your treatments effectively.
  3. Take the time to have a detailed consultation with your doctor to fully understand the laser rejuvenation procedure. Ask any questions you may have and ensure that you have a clear understanding of what to expect during and after the treatment.
  4. The level of discomfort during laser rejuvenation can vary. Ablative lasers, which remove the surface layer of the skin, may cause some pain and burning sensation. However, the use of an anesthetic cream can help make the treatment more comfortable, and many patients do not feel significant pain.
  5. It is crucial to follow the advice and instructions given by your doctor after laser rejuvenation. This includes proper skin care, such as using a high-protection factor cream and maintaining skin hydration. Adhering to these recommendations will promote optimal healing and enhance the results of the treatment.

the choice of laser

Apart from the expertise of the doctor, the quality of the laser used is indeed a crucial factor in achieving effective rejuvenation results. At our clinic, we carefully select the appropriate laser based on each individual’s indications and skin condition to ensure optimal outcomes. Depending on the case, we may use a single laser or a combination of multiple lasers to address specific concerns.
During the consultation, our doctors thoroughly explain the details of the chosen laser, the procedure itself, and the expected recovery period. We stay updated with the latest advancements in laser rejuvenation technology, and as a result, we have access to the most advanced lasers used in exclusive clinics worldwide. Our range of lasers includes both ablative and non-ablative options, allowing us to effectively treat various indications and provide our patients with the best possible results.
Let us introduce you to each type of laser we use, along with the indications they are suitable for and the recovery process associated with them.

Laser rejuvenation with non-ablative lasers

Non-ablative lasers refer to those that do not remove the outer layer of the skin. Instead, they penetrate into the deeper layers while keeping the surface intact. This makes laser rejuvenation with non-ablative lasers suitable for year-round treatment. With these lasers, patients may experience temporary redness of the skin, which quickly subsides. However, there are typically no other side effects such as skin flaking or peeling. Among the various non-ablative lasers available, we frequently utilize pulse lasers.
To provide our patients with optimal results, we rely on three lasers from the Harmony XL PRO platform, which aligns with the slogan “One solution for complete skin care.” These lasers offer excellent outcomes and are part of our comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation.

ClearLift laser

The ClearLift Q-switch Nd:Yag laser, also known as the Hollywood Lunchtime Facelift, is a highly popular non-ablative laser worldwide for skin rejuvenation. It has earned recognition as the best laser in the “My face, my body” competition held in Great Britain, and for good reason. This laser offers precise control over the depth of treatment, penetrating the deeper layers of the skin while leaving the surface unharmed. Consequently, treatments can be performed throughout the year.

We use the ClearLift laser for the following indications:

  • Fine wrinkles and lines on the face, neck, and décolletage.
  • Mild skin laxity.
  • Enlarged pores and capillaries.
  • Photodamage, hyperpigmentation, uneven complexion, and melasma.

The laser beam is adjusted to penetrate to a specific depth in the skin, tailored to the indications being treated. It creates micro-injuries that stimulate natural skin renewal, as well as the synthesis of collagen and elastin. Visible results are quickly achieved, with no recovery period necessary, and the treatment is suitable for all skin types. The skin is visibly rejuvenated while maintaining a natural appearance.
A ClearLift laser treatment typically lasts about 30 minutes, and the optimal number of sessions ranges between 3 and 4. However, this may vary depending on the individual’s skin condition and desired outcomes.

ClearSkin laser

The ClearSkin Pro Er:Glass 1540nm laser combines a non-ablative mode with vacuum cooling, offering almost painless treatments with no recovery period. This laser can be used throughout the year. It is primarily employed to treat acne and reduce acne scars. Additionally, its laser rays stimulate collagen production, leading to skin rejuvenation and regeneration.
ClearSkin laser treatments typically last around 30 minutes, and the integrated cooling system ensures comfort and a pleasant experience. Following the treatment, the skin may appear pink to red, but this redness subsides within a maximum of 8 hours. Makeup can be applied the next day, and there is no required recovery period. For optimal results within a shorter timeframe, we often combine this laser with the ClearLift laser.

Nir and DYE VL

As part of the Harmony XL PRO platform, the NIR (Near-Infrared) module provides immediate skin tightening effects. This laser emits therapeutic light in the near-infrared spectrum, with a wavelength ranging from 700 to 2,500 nm, similar to the wavelength of the solar spectrum. This stimulates natural skin rejuvenation and has a biostimulating effect. By heating the tissue to a temperature of approximately 40 to 44°C, the NIR laser promotes collagen and elastin synthesis, activates coenzyme Q10 production, and tightens relaxed collagen fibers. The result is renewed and rejuvenated skin, along with an immediate lifting effect. The expected effects include instantly tightened skin and a smooth, radiant appearance with a noticeable “glow” effect. NIR laser treatments can be performed throughout the year, and the number of sessions required varies depending on individual needs.
Now, let’s discuss the Harmony Dye VL laser. This laser is primarily used to address redness, capillaries, rosacea, and other skin imperfections. It also stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity and firmness. Due to its ability to enhance collagen levels, this treatment is often referred to as photorejuvenation.

Laser rejuvenation with ablative lasers

Ablative lasers are indeed the most powerful lasers used for skin rejuvenation, as they remove the outermost layer of the skin. However, this also means that they require a longer recovery period compared to non-ablative lasers. After ablative laser procedures, the skin becomes highly sensitive and prone to hyperpigmentation. To minimize the risk of complications, such as excessive sun exposure and hyperpigmentation, we perform these treatments exclusively from October to March when there is less sunlight.
In our office, we use two types of ablative lasers: the Candela CO2 laser and the IPIXEL Er:YAG laser. Both of these lasers are highly effective in achieving skin rejuvenation results, but they require careful post-treatment care and adherence to the recommended recovery period.

Candela CO2 laser

The fractionated ablative laser we utilize is considered the most powerful in the world. It precisely targets all layers of the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue intact, resulting in a significantly shortened recovery period.

The CO2 laser is designed to address various concerns, including:

  • Softening shallow lines and wrinkles
  • Tightening the skin on the eyelids
  • Skin rejuvenation and tightening
  • Evening out complexion, reducing hyperpigmentation and spots
  • Treating acne scars and stretch marks

The procedure with the CO2 laser involves two steps. Firstly, we perform ablation, which entails removing the damaged surface layer of the skin. Following that, the laser creates microchannels in the deeper layers, heating the tissue and stimulating collagen production and the growth of healthy skin cells. This intense stimulation of the deeper layers leads to collagen remodeling and the development of new skin, resulting in tightened skin and smoother wrinkles.
The recovery period typically lasts 7 to 10 days, during which the skin naturally peels and exfoliates. The number of required treatments depends on the individual condition of the skin. In certain cases, we can target only the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) with the CO2 laser, resulting in a shorter recovery period of 3 to 5 days with temporary redness and the absence of flaking since the superficial part of the skin is not treated.

IPIXEL Er:YAG laser

As part of the Harmony XL Pro platform, the fractional ablative IPIXEL Er:YAG laser delivers exceptional rejuvenation results. It combines the traditional erbium laser with modern PIXEL technology, emitting a wavelength of 2940 nm. This laser effectively addresses various concerns such as wrinkle softening, restoring skin elasticity and firmness, evening out the complexion, and eliminating hyperpigmentation, scars, and stretch marks.
The IPIXEL Er:YAG laser works by exfoliating the surface layer of the skin while simultaneously initiating renewal and regenerative processes in the deeper layers. Its fractionated laser beam enables a faster recovery period, and noticeable improvements can be seen after the initial treatment. After a series of several treatments, the skin appears visibly rejuvenated, healthier, and brighter.
To ensure optimal results and safety, we perform treatments with the IPIXEL Er:YAG laser during the autumn and winter seasons. You can learn more about this laser and its benefits by exploring the provided link.

Ablative vs. non-ablative lasers

In general, the rule applies to laser treatments, as well as most aesthetic and anti-aging procedures, that the more invasive the treatment and the longer the recovery period, the more dramatic the results. Non-ablative lasers have a moderate impact on collagen formation, requiring a series of treatments to achieve stronger and tighter skin tone. These lasers are particularly effective for individuals with mild sagging skin and moderate signs of skin aging. One of the advantages of non-ablative lasers is that they have no recovery period and can be used throughout the year. They are a great option when you want to achieve instant skin tightening and radiance, making them suitable for important events.
On the other hand, ablative lasers have a longer recovery time of approximately 7 days, during which redness and flaking may occur. They are exclusively used from early fall to early spring due to their more powerful impact on collagen formation. In fact, the effects of a single CO2 laser treatment can be comparable to multiple treatments with non-ablative lasers. Ablative lasers are considered the gold standard for skin rejuvenation, especially for individuals with pronounced signs of aging and other imperfections such as hyperpigmentation, freckles, and fine lines around the lips and eyes.

Laser rejuvenation – before and after

In the before and after pictures displayed below, the CO2 laser was used to tighten the skin, eliminate wrinkles, and address minor excess skin on the lower eyelids. Alongside the CO2 laser treatment, both patients also received additional non-surgical procedures such as hyaluronic fillers, Botox, skin boosters, and more, to enhance the overall rejuvenation of their faces and skin. What does laser rejuvenation look like?

After consulting with our doctor, we assess the condition of the skin and determine the specific indications that require treatment. Based on this assessment, we select the most suitable laser or combination of lasers to achieve the desired results. The treatment process begins with cleansing the skin, followed by the targeted application of the laser over the designated area. If needed, we can apply an anesthetic cream to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure. It is crucial to adhere to the post-treatment guidelines provided by your doctor to facilitate a speedy recovery and maintain long-lasting results.
It is important to understand that laser rejuvenation should not be considered a substitute for surgical facelift procedures. Lasers are unable to address changes that occur in the subcutaneous tissue, which naturally undergoes aging and transformation over time. Deep fat tissue and muscle tissue cannot be tightened or affected by lasers since they do not penetrate to those depths.

Is laser resurfacing safe?

All the lasers we utilize have been clinically approved and are completely safe for use.

Is laser resurfacing painful?

When necessary, we apply an anesthetic cream to minimize any discomfort during the procedure.
