Wrinkles around the lips can make the face appear tired and older, so it’s crucial to address them promptly. These wrinkles indicate that our skin is aging and losing its elasticity, fullness, and smoothness. To eliminate the wrinkles around the lips, options such as hyaluronic fillers, botox injections, or CO2 laser treatment can be effective. As early as the age of 35, the skin in this area begins to lose volume and firmness, resulting in more noticeable wrinkles.

Wrinkles AROUND THE LIPS

Wrinkles around the lips – causes

Genetic Predispositions

Genetics plays a significant role in the development of wrinkles. Some individuals may experience their first wrinkles around 25, while others maintain a youthful, wrinkle-free appearance for aonger  Dry skin accelerates aging and the formation of wrinkles. The aging process affects all layers of the skin, and the resulting changes manifest as visible signs of aging on the surface.

Collagen Reduction

After turning 25, collagen concentration decreases by 1% per year. This decrease, combined with lower hyaluronic acid production and reduced skin hydration, makes the skin more vulnerable to external factors and damage. Consequently, elasticity, tone, volume, and wrinkles appear around the lips, forehead, eyes, and neck.

Solar Radiation Exposure

Exposure to harmful UV rays without adequate protection is a leading cause of premature skin aging and the development of wrinkles. This exposure leads to photodamage, characterized by spots and pigmentation on the skin.

Smoking

Smokers are more prone to wrinkles around the lips due to repetitive movements made while inhaling tobacco smoke. These wrinkles are often referred to as “smoker’s wrinkles.” Cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine and other harmful substances, which generate free radicals and accelerate skin deterioration.

Stress

Stressful situations cause facial muscle tension and frowning, contributing to the formation of wrinkles. Stress has numerous adverse effects on the body, including triggering premature aging. Minimizing stress should be a priority.

Inadequate Skincare

Proper skincare is essential to maintain healthy skin and delay the onset of wrinkles. Neglecting skincare routines and failing to meet the skin’s specific needs can lead to accelerated skin deterioration and the earlier appearance of wrinkles. Each skin type requires particular care and treatments.

Other Factors

Factors such as poor nutrition, inadequate hydration, fluctuations in body weight, and pollution also contribute significantly to premature skin aging and the development of various types of wrinkles, including those around the lips.

Types of wrinkles around the lips

There are several types of wrinkles around the lips, each located in specific areas. These include nasolabial folds, wrinkles above the lips, marionette wrinkles, and the sagging of the jaws.

Nasolabial folds

Nasolabial folds are the vertical lines running from the nose bridge to the corners of the lips. Often called smile wrinkles, they result from facial expressions and muscle activation in this area. Over time, the production of fibroblasts, responsible for elastin and hyaluronan production, decreases, causing a loss of elasticity and fullness. Consequently, the skin becomes thinner, and nasolabial folds deepen and become more noticeable. The aging process also leads to a resorption of cheekbones and fat tissue descent, making the wrinkles more pronounced.

Perioral wrinkles

Wrinkles above the lips, also known as perioral wrinkles, appear as vertical lines and folds above and around the lips. Smoking can accelerate their appearance due to reduced oxygen supply and repetitive movements. However, these wrinkles can also manifest in non-smokers due to frequent muscle movements and facial expressions. Smoker’s lines can be stubborn and challenging to remove over time.

Marionette wrinkles

Marionette wrinkles earned their name because they give the face a sad, serious expression reminiscent of marionette puppets. These vertical lines run diagonally from the corners of the lips to the chin and are caused by constant contractions of the muscle (depressor angulis oris) pulling the lips down. With aging, the skin’s natural changes make these wrinkles more visible and deeper. They are commonly found symmetrically on both sides of the chin and contribute to a serious and tired appearance.

Jaws

Jaws, although not technically wrinkles, involve sagging subcutaneous tissue folds. To learn about ways to address these wrinkles around the chin and lower jaw, refer to the Chin and Jawline page.

How to remove wrinkles around the lips?

At our office, we employ cutting-edge and highly effective methods for eliminating wrinkles around the lips. Our patients have had positive experiences, attesting to the success of these treatments. Notably, our procedures are non-invasive and do not require surgery, ensuring minimal recovery time while delivering long-term results. By addressing and reducing wrinkles around the lips, we can restore a youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the face. It is crucial to emphasize that treating different types of lip wrinkles demands specific approaches, and the outcome of each treatment is reliant on the doctor’s expertise, experience, and the quality of products used.

Hyaluronic fillers for nasolabial folds

We have found that the most effective non-surgical method for removing nasolabial wrinkles is through the use of hyaluronic fillers. These wrinkles are often caused by a loss of tissue in the cheekbone area, which leads to their merging with the cheeks, and gravity pulling the skin downward, resulting in nasolabial wrinkles.

To achieve optimal results, we strategically inject hyaluronic fillers into specific points in the cheek area where the most significant volume loss has occurred, which we professionally refer to as MD codes or medical codes. These points, marked as Ck1, Ck2, Ck3, and Ck4 (from “cheekbone”), help lift the facial tone, slightly tighten the skin, and reduce the visibility of nasolabial wrinkles. Additionally, we apply a certain amount of hyaluronan directly to the nasolabial folds themselves.

The effects of nasolabial fold filling with hyaluronic fillers include:

  • Restoring the face’s original contours and achieving a fresh, youthful appearance by gently tightening the lower and middle thirds of the face.
  • Reducing the visibility of nasolabial wrinkles.
  • Maintaining a completely natural facial appearance with the use of minimal hyaluronic filler.

The results typically last between 12 to 15 months, and the treatment itself takes approximately 45 minutes. Our procedure is nearly painless due to the application of a topical anesthetic. There is no recovery period, although some patients may experience minor swelling and redness after the treatment. We prioritize the use of only the highest quality and registered products, including JUVÉDERM hyaluronic fillers, Restylane, and Teosyal fillers.

For individuals with mature skin showing drooping corners of the lips and loss of fullness in the chin, an 8-point facelift is recommended, especially for those over 35 years of age. The 8-point hyaluronic face lift is an excellent solution for addressing both nasolabial and marionette wrinkles. This procedure involves lifting the cheekbones, filling nasolabial folds, dark circles, and the temple area, while also correcting the chin and lower jaw area. The effects of this treatment can last up to two years, and the entire procedure takes around 60 minutes.

Botox, hyaluronic acid and laser for smoker’s lines

Treating smoker’s lines promptly is crucial, as they can deepen and become more pronounced over time.

Botox for smoker’s lines:

Botox has been a highly effective wrinkle removal and rejuvenation technique for many years. It is particularly reliable in addressing smoker’s wrinkles, which result from muscle contractions, spasms, and expressive facial movements caused by smoking. Botox successfully removes these wrinkles, refreshes the face, and provides a tightening effect. Additionally, it helps prevent the development of new deep wrinkles. Botox is safe, virtually painless, and the treatment takes only a few minutes. The effects last around 3 to 4 months, sometimes longer. For lasting results, Botox treatment should be repeated two to three times annually.

Hyaluronic fillers for smoker’s lines:

We effectively address smoker’s wrinkles using hyaluronic fillers with a softer structure, such as JUVÉDERM Volbella. These fillers deeply hydrate the skin, improving its quality and rejuvenating it for several months.

CO2 laser for smoker’s lines:

Candela CO2 laser treatment is ideal for skin rejuvenation, tightening, scar removal, and excess skin reduction. This multifunctional device provides quick and long-lasting results. The treatment involves surface ablation with a laser to remove the upper, damaged skin layer while stimulating collagen and elastin production in the deeper layers. The result is firmer, tighter skin with an even texture and complexion, and reduced visibility of wrinkles. More information on Candela CO2 laser treatment can be found here.

Lip filling for reduced smoker’s lines:

As part of the aging process, lips may lose fullness, shape, and contours, with corners drooping. Filling the lips with hyaluronic fillers can restore their fullness and shape, accentuating the Cupid’s bow and lifting the drooping corners. This significantly reduces the visibility of smoker’s wrinkles. Addressing smoker’s lines through these methods can lead to excellent results and contribute to a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. See how it looks in a specific case here.

Hyaluronic fillers for marionette wrinkles

Marionette lines, located in the lower third of the face, can be softened or completely eliminated by filling them with hyaluronic fillers. The most effective approach to remove them involves the injection of these fillers. Often, we treat them alongside the entire chin to address the folds and “bags” that can form in that area. Correcting the chin or jawline may also be necessary. Here are some examples of our satisfied patients.
