Weak chin disrupts the harmony and beauty of the face, and this problem becomes more pronounced with aging.

Balance and harmony are believed to be crucial for a happy life. Whether this statement holds true or not, we leave that decision up to you. What we can affirm is that harmony is an integral aspect of facial beauty. So, what does this mean exactly? When we examine the face, we divide it into three sections: the upper, middle, and lower thirds. These thirds correspond to distinct areas of the face—the forehead, the central area encompassing the eyes and nose, and the chin and jaw area. The harmonious relationship among these three areas directly influences the overall harmony and attractiveness of the face. If any of these areas is excessively emphasized or deviates from the others, the face loses its harmony. If you happen to have a receding chin, we have a solution to make you happy! Modern medicine offers non-surgical chin correction using hyaluronic fillers, in addition to surgical methods.

What is a weak chin?

A weak, small, or receding chin refers to a situation where the chin’s tip lacks sufficient forward projection to maintain balance with other facial features, such as the nose and forehead.
How can you determine if your chin is receding in a simple manner? When observing your profile, you can assess the most prominent point of your chin, known as the pogonion, in relation to an imaginary vertical line called Rickett’s line, which extends from your nose to your chin. For women, ideally, the pogonion should align with this line or be positioned 1-2 millimeters behind it. For men, it is preferable for the pogonion to slightly protrude in front of the line. Regardless, if your pogonion falls behind this line, it indicates a weak chin.

What causes weak chin?

The primary causes of a receding chin commonly stem from genetic factors or the loss of subcutaneous tissue volume in the chin due to aging.
As we grow older, the subcutaneous tissue in the chin, consisting of muscle, fat, and bone, undergoes changes and diminishes in size. Most individuals reach their peak bone mass around the age of 25. Afterward, calcium production decreases, leading to a decline in bone density and the consequent shortening and upward pulling of the chin due to the reduction in bone tissue.
Aging also impacts the skin itself. The loss of collagen and elastin results in the formation of shallow wrinkles, which deepen over time. Notably, marionette lines, prominent creases extending from the corners of the lips, contribute to a sad and aged appearance. Moreover, the subcutaneous tissue sags, causing bags and drooping in the chin and lower jaw area, particularly noticeable in individuals with a receding or small chin. The underdevelopment of the chin not only affects itself but also has a negative impact on other facial areas. Primarily, the nose may appear disproportionately large compared to the rest of the face. Additionally, the neck area is prone to developing a double chin, further diminishing the already small and indented chin and merging it with the neck.

Correction of weak chin

If you find a receding or weak chin bothersome, there are various ways to address it by altering its shape, size, and projection. In the past, surgical options such as chin implants or genioplasty were popular choices. However, with the introduction of hyaluronic fillers, fewer individuals with a receding chin are opting for surgical procedures.
The advantage of fillers lies in their less invasive nature, minimal recovery time, and immediate visible results following the treatment. Additionally, the use of hyaluronic fillers offers great adaptability, allowing for the possibility of adding or removing them later if needed.

What hyaluronic fillers can do for weak chin?

Hyaluronic fillers offer various benefits and corrections for the chin:

  1. Lengthening: If the chin appears short when viewed from the front, hyaluronic fillers can help elongate it.
  2. Projection: They correct a receding chin by enhancing its forward projection when viewed from the profile.
  3. Width adjustment: Hyaluronic fillers can increase or decrease the width of the lower part of the chin. For women, achieving a rounded chin, where the width is not greater than the distance between the inner corners of the eyes, is often desired. Some women may have a wider or more pointed chin, which can contribute to an imbalanced facial appearance. Men typically have a square chin.
  4. Marionette wrinkle correction: Fillers can address marionette wrinkles, which are prominent lines extending from the corners of the mouth.
  5. Jawline correction: Hyaluronic fillers can also assist in correcting sagging jaws that occur with aging, improving the definition of the lower jawline.

Minor chin correction usually requires an average of 2 ml of filler. If both the chin and jawline are being treated, 3 to 4 ml of hyaluronic filler may be necessary.

What type of hyaluronic fillers is used for chin?

As mentioned earlier, chin correction using hyaluronic acid fillers is an excellent option for individuals seeking an effective, safe, and non-surgical solution with minimal recovery time. These hyaluronic fillers are specifically formulated to provide the chin with shape, projection, and volume by using a denser and firmer consistency. Among the commonly utilized chin fillers is JUVÉDERM Volux, which is specifically designed to mimic the properties of an implant due to its specific density.
