Enlarged pores look like small holes or depressions in the skin and are a major aesthetic problem. With modern treatments such as chemical peels, microbotox or lasers, we effectively narrow the pores and restore a healthy and beautiful appearance to the face.
What are enlarged pores?
Our skin is our largest organ and is completely covered with tiny openings called pores. We have several hundred thousand pores on our face alone! Their role is great, because they allow the skin to breathe and maintain the body’s metabolism.
Types of pores
Sweat pores are the ones that are of crucial importance for our body. They allow sweat to surface, cool the body and thus maintain body temperature. These pores are generally small and can rarely be enlarged.
Sebaceous pores are located at the openings of the sebaceous glands. The larger the sebaceous gland, the larger the pores on the skin. The sebaceous glands secrete sebum, a natural oil that keeps the skin moist. If the secretion of sebum is increased, the pores expand so that the sebum comes to the surface. If the ducts of the sebaceous glands become blocked, sebum and dead cells accumulate in the pores, and then various acne and pimples appear.
Pores can be small, unnoticeable or enlarged. If the pores are enlarged, we will recognize them as small holes in the skin or as bumps if excess sebum has accumulated in them. It is very important to react in time if we have enlarged pores. Not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to prevent inflammatory processes on the skin, acne and other complications.
Why do enlarged pores occur?
Enlarged pores greatly affect the appearance of the skin. They can often act like blackheads, when the end of the pore is dark in color. Large pores most often appear in the T zone of the face – on the forehead, nose, chin, but they can also appear on the cheeks. There are various factors that lead to the expansion of pores on the skin.
Genetics is certainly one of the determining factors when it comes to enlarged pores. A certain type of skin can also cause enlarged pores, and people with oily skin most often have this aesthetic problem.
Solar radiation causes premature aging of the skin. Exposure to harmful UV rays leads to drying of the skin, it loses its elasticity, collagen stores decrease and the ability to regenerate cells is reduced. When the skin is less elastic and dry, the inner tissue shrinks and the pores expand, becoming more visible. Aging skin will cause it to become thinner, looser and rougher. As a result, the pores become more pronounced and noticeable.
Hormonal imbalance, especially during pregnancy or menopause, can lead to increased secretion of sebum and enlarged pores.
Finally, inadequate skin care and the use of comedogenic products that close pores is a common cause of enlarged pores.
The most effective treatments for enlarged pores
Although enlarged pores are not a health or medical problem, but purely aesthetic, it is very important to recognize them in time and treat them appropriately. When we have enlarged pores, the facial skin does not look healthy or cared for, it does not have freshness or shine, the face looks tired. As a result, the skin loses its elasticity faster, and if acne appears, then the problem will be even more difficult to solve.
If you notice enlarged pores, it is best to have a detailed dermatological examination. The doctor will determine whether it is really enlarged pores, what is the condition of the skin and what is the best way to solve the problem. There are a number of treatments that are available to you in our practice and which effectively narrow the pores and restore a healthy appearance to the face. Now we will introduce you to each of them.
TCA peeling
TCA peeling is a type of chemical peeling. It is performed using trichloroacetic acid, which is applied to the face in several layers, depending on the indications we are treating. The strength of the acid determines the strength of the peeling itself, so it can be medium deep or deep.
When it comes to enlarged pores, TCA peeling has the role of deeply cleaning the outlet ducts of the sebaceous glands. In this way, the pores themselves are narrowed and the appearance of blackheads and pimples is prevented. Also, peeling will balance the oiliness of the skin and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. TCA peeling is performed during autumn and winter, because then there is the least UV radiation and the least possibility of hyperpigmentation on the face after the treatment. The recovery process includes peeling of the skin that lasts about 7 days. The skin is red after the treatment itself, then darkens and peels off in layers. In this way, we free up space for the growth of new, young skin on which the pores are narrowed and photodamage mitigated. TCA peeling is also a great way to rejuvenate the skin and even out the complexion.
Microbotox
Botox is one of the most popular antiaging procedures, because it quickly and effectively removes wrinkles and rejuvenates the face. Microbotox, mesobotox or baby botox involves the injection of smaller concentrations of botox. We use it to remove fine lines, as well as in patients who do not have very pronounced facial expressions. It is an excellent option for narrowing enlarged pores. Applying small amounts of Botox will increase the elasticity of the skin, and the tissue around the pores will shrink. This will lead to the narrowing of the pores and, at the same time, to the regulation of the work of the sebaceous glands and the production of sebum. Due to smaller amounts of Botox, the results last less, usually around 3 months. Learn all about Botox treatment here.
Lasers
The choice of laser is of the greatest importance, so we choose only high-quality and modern ones that give maximum results in the shortest possible time. For enlarged pores, we most often use the CO2 laser, as well as ClearLift and Ipixel Er:Yag laser.
CO2 laser for enlarged pores
Candela CO2 RE laser is one of the most powerful in the world and its field of action is really wide. With this laser, we effectively tighten and rejuvenate the skin, remove wrinkles, scars, pigmentation and stretch marks. It is a fractional ablative laser that removes the surface layer of the skin, which is why recovery lasts from 7 to 10 days. We perform CO2 laser treatments from October to March, when UV radiation is the least.
Candela CO2 laser strongly stimulates the deeper layers of the skin, where the production of new and remodeling of existing collagen appears. New collagen fibers form a support network of the skin, it is tighter and more elastic, and the pores are narrowed. The number of required treatments will depend on the condition of the skin. One to two CO2 laser treatments give results that other lasers achieve only after 4 to 6 treatments. Read everything you are interested in about the CO2 laser here.
ClearLift laser for enlarged pores
The ClearLift Pro laser is part of the Harmony XL Pro laser multifunctional platform. This is a non-ablative laser and we do treatments throughout the year. Skin imperfections, such as enlarged pores and capillaries, are solved by the ClearLift laser quickly, painlessly and effectively. The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes.
IPixel Er:Yag laser for enlarged pores
It is a fractionated ablative laser that effectively improves the overall quality and texture of the skin and reduces scars. The IPIXEL Er:YAG laser performs a peeling effect on the surface of the skin, while in the deeper layers it initiates regenerative processes.
