Hyaluronic acid, commonly known as hyaluronan, is a natural substance used for lip augmentation. It is present in our body and is recognized as compatible, making it completely safe for use. Its main characteristic is its ability to retain a large amount of water. Consequently, it can fill in wrinkles when applied to other areas of the face (e.g., nasolabial folds) and restore fullness to the skin and lips. The structure of hyaluronic fillers is similar to that of the lips, eliminating any unnatural sensation of a foreign body after the treatment. The sensitivity of the lips remains completely intact when hyaluronic acid is applied.

In some individuals, the lips naturally have proper and distinct contours, while in others, they may already be full but lack contour. Frequently, both volume and contour may be lacking. Regardless of the situation, hyaluronic fillers enhance the volume and shape of the lips, correct asymmetry, hydrate the lips, lift the corners, and smooth out wrinkles above the upper lip (often referred to as smoker’s wrinkles).

Yes! Hyaluronic acid fillers are a completely safe and approved option for lip augmentation. Biopolymers and silicone are prohibited substances due to the high incidence of complications associated with them. The main disadvantage of these substances is the increased likelihood of developing granulomas, which can only be removed through surgical intervention and may lead to unfavorable aesthetic outcomes.

Lip augmentation is performed following the application of numbing cream, minimizing discomfort during the procedure. The hyaluronic acid filler is then injected into specific locations using a needle or cannula, precisely targeting the desired areas.
The entire lip augmentation procedure usually takes around fifteen minutes, and the results are immediately noticeable. However, the final aesthetic outcome becomes more apparent after a few days as the hyaluronic acid binds water and settles into place, providing a pleasing appearance.

To prepare for the treatment, it is important to consider the following guidelines:

1. Avoid certain medications and supplements: Patients should refrain from taking anticoagulants, vitamin E, ginkgo, and preparations containing omega-3 fatty acids for ten days prior to the treatment. These substances can increase the risk of bruising. If avoiding them is not possible, the treatment can still be performed, but there is a higher likelihood of bruising. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Regarding the recovery and post-treatment care:

1. Immediate after-effects: Immediately after the treatment, redness and small bumps may be visible at the injection sites. These effects typically subside within a few hours.
2. Twelve-hour rest period: It is advised to refrain from applying makeup and engaging in intense physical activity for at least twelve hours after the treatment.
3. Return to normal activities: After the short recovery period, patients can generally resume their normal activities.

A recommendation: If there is an upcoming event where you wish to look your best, it is suggested to undergo lip correction with hyaluronic acid filler at least 14 days in advance. This allows time for any swelling to subside and bruises to fade before the event.

Using high-quality hyaluronic fillers, the effect of lip augmentation typically lasts for 9 to 12 months. With each subsequent treatment, a smaller amount of filler is necessary.
